Weight loss

Aesthetic surgery after a weight loss

Obesity is a major concern in recent time as it is now considered as a real disease faced by many people. Around 10% of the population in France and Europe and 20% of the population in the US, Great Britain and countries of the Gulf suffer from this problem. The effects of obesity include high risks of heart, kidney and diabetic diseases, and these risks can have dire consequences on life expectancy.

Weight management can be achieved by doing a Body Mass Index (BMI) test. This test represents the corpulence of a person and according to World Health Organization (WHO) it can be calculated by the formula below;

Weight (k) / Height² (mètres). A BMI scale of 18.5 and below is considered as underweight, 18.5 to 25 is normal, 25 to 30 is overweight while a BMI scale of 30 and above is considered as obesity.

A multidisciplinary team may be needed in managing obesity pathology:

  • a nutritionist doctor
  • a digestive surgeon specialized in bariatric surgery
  • a psychologist or a psychiatrist
  • a plastic surgeon.

Though weight loss is beneficial in order to stay healthy, it may lead to disabling aesthetic after-effects due to the loss of skin elasticity. Sagging skin and cutaneous slackening are likely to appear in case of a significant weight loss.
