Blepharoplasty
With age, your face suffers from the effects of time, and changes occur. The zone around the eyes is particularly affected: the skin is very delicate around the eyes, it loses its elasticity, and sags, then wrinkles appear, along with little wrinkles and other marks of the passage of time. Excess skin appears on the upper eyelid creating the need for the person to raise their eyebrows, which in turn creates wrinkles on the forehead. With the lower eyelid the skin forms bags with small wrinkles. Today, cosmetic surgery provides a simple solution to correct this problem and restore a youthful appearance.
a blepharoplasty is an operation during which the excess skin of the upper eyelids and the bags under the lower eyelids are eliminated. The operation can be for women as well as men, usually over 40 years of age, when the first signs of a deterioration of the skin due to ageing appear, but the procedure can also pertain to younger patients if the eyelid bags are genetic. Blepharoplasty can also correct under-eye hollowing and crow’s feet wrinkles around the eyes, for a look which is visibly younger and more relaxed. In total immersion, discover how this operation progresses in the operating theatre.
The procedure in the operating theatre
The operation is carried out on an outpatient basis, lasting between 1 and 2 hours. A blepharoplasty of the upper eyelid is made in several stages:
- first of all Dr Rajao draws the upper eyelid crease, based on references which can vary depending on the sex of the patient – the inferior edge placed between 7 and 9 mm from the upper lashes for men and 8 to 10 mm for women – as well as the drawing of the skin resection. Two lines are drawn:
- the lower part of the skin resection, from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner, which will be hidden in a crows’ foot wrinkle,
- the drawing of the upper part, drawn by gently pinching the skin of the eyelid in order to determine the excess skin to be removed.
The size of the resection as well as the symmetry of the two eyes are meticulously controlled by Dr Rajao.
- Local anaesthetic – is carried out even when the operation is under a general anaesthetic.
It helps to improve the dissection and reduces bleeding – at the same time limiting the risk of bruising. The anaesthetic is administered very slowly by using very fine needles to avoid the slightest pain.
For patients who request it, a light or general anaesthetic is proposed.
After 8 days any bruising will have disappeared. Patients can also start using cosmetics again, which will cover any scarring. The scars will quickly become nearly invisible. The procedure has minimal impact on your social life, as the downtime is so short.
The final result will be observed between the 2nd and 3rd month after the operation – the time that the swelling disappears and the scars completely fade.
